What is self-discipline?

Self-discipline the ability to control one’s actions in order to do what is correct despite temptations. Discipline can be demonstrated through action towards what is considered right or through inaction when unproductive urges arise. This form of self-control is a mental skill that requires consistent practice and education.

Why is self-discipline important?

Developing this skill is key to unlocking freedom within one’s life. In a world filled with almost unavoidable temptations, it is necessary to learn how to adapt and overcome unproductive obstacles. With strong mental discipline one’s focus becomes razor-sharp, and achieving goals becomes inevitable.

 

How can I improve my self-discipline? (5-steps)

Self-discipline is not a character trait, rather it is a mental skill that anyone can develop and implement, the learning and consistent practice of these 5 steps is the key to creating unbreakable self-control.

(1) Set goals

Setting goals is an essential part of building self-discipline because it creates a sense of direction in one’s life. Write down on paper or electronically what it is specifically that you want to achieve and associate a timeframe for completion. Refer back to the list of goals created frequently as a reminder of what is truly important in your life.

(2) Set a schedule 

Delegating one’s future time in the form of a schedule will create a productive path that can be followed to success. Think ahead and plan when work on created goals should be done and make a physical schedule to refer back to if necessary. Creating a schedule such as this will allow you to be aware of how and where time is being spent which will make unproductive temptations more transparent.

(3) Eliminate distractions

Find and eliminate all distractions that are unproductive and preventing the accomplishment of goals. Decipher what activities and which people are hindering the path towards success by negatively interrupting the productive schedule created. Once something or someone is recognized as being a negative influence the temptation to waste time with them must be fought and won.

 (4) Control emotions

Emotions are powerful feelings that can positively or negatively influence the actions of people. Emotions are unavoidable, that is why it is essential to learn how to control and direct emotions into positive actions. Sometimes acting in opposition to emotions is necessary to maintain the discipline schedule created. The key is to maintain the same actions regardless of the underlying emotional state, this consistency will strengthen one’s self-discipline.

 (5) Overcome failure

Encountering failure is an inevitable hurdle that must be overcome in any endeavor. Failure is typically closely associated with the feeling of discouragement which can affect self-discipline like poison. The feeling of discouragement has a destructive nature which is why it needs to be avoided at all times.  Facing a failure is evidence of effort towards a goal and the temporary setback needs to be recognized as a vital learning opportunity.
