How Can I Improve My Self-Discipline? (5-steps)

Self-discipline is not a character trait, and rather it is a mental skill that anyone can develop and implement. The learning and consistent practice of these 5 steps is the key to creating unbreakable self-control.

(1) Set goals

Setting goals is an essential part of building self-discipline because it creates a sense of direction in one’s life. First, write down on a paper, whiteboard, or electronically what it is specifically that you want to achieve. Second, associate a timeframe for goal completion. Refer back to the list of goals created frequently to remind yourself what is truly important in your life.

(2) Set a schedule 

Delegating one’s future time in the form of a schedule will create a productive path. You can follow this guideline all the way to success. Think ahead and plan when you will work on your created goals, and make a physical schedule to refer back to if necessary. In addition, when you make a schedule, it will increase your awareness of how and where your time is being spent. Moreover, unproductive temptations will become more transparent.

(3) Eliminate distractions

Find and eliminate all distractions that are unproductive and preventing the accomplishment of goals. Decipher which activities and people are hindering your path towards success by negatively interrupting your production schedule. Therefore, once you recognize something or someone as a negative influence, you must avoid the temptation to waste time with them. Do not let others drag you down or negatively impact your motivation.

(4) Control emotions

Emotions are powerful feelings that can positively or negatively influence the actions of people. However, emotions are unavoidable, so it is essential to learn how to control and direct emotions into positive actions. Sometimes acting in opposition to emotions is necessary to maintain the discipline schedule created. The key is to maintain the same actions regardless of the underlying emotional state. This consistency will strengthen one’s self-discipline.

(5) Overcome failure

Encountering failure is an inevitable hurdle that you must overcome in any endeavor. Failure is closely associated with the feeling of discouragement, which will affect self-discipline like poison.
